A 12-year-old boy will appear in court after being charged with sexual assault without consent.

The boy was arrested at his home in the early hours of this morning after he allegedly sexually assaulted a six-year-old girl at a park in Gillen yesterday evening.

Police were called after the victim told her mother about the incident which occurred around 5pm. The incident was witnessed by an 11-year-old boy who intervened, allowing the girl to escape. She was later found near White Street by a Caucasian couple who were travelling in a white utility. The couple took the distressed child  to her home.

Police would like  to talk to the couple in the white utility who assisted the girl and they are asked to contact investigating detectives by phoning 131444.
