Update – Fatal Crash – Alice Springs

Police

Investigations are continuing in relation to the fatal crash that occurred near Alice Springs on Wednesday 9 November.

Detective Sergeant Michael Schumacher said a Toyota Prado 4x4 was travelling along Luritja Road, 30km’s outside of Kings Canyon when it rolled.

“There were four occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash which resulted in the death of a 55-year-old woman,” said Detective Sergeant Schumacher.

“Another 55-year-old female received critical injuries and was medivaced to Royal Adelaide Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

“It is believed that neither of the women, both back seat passengers, were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, resulting in them being ejected from the vehicle.

“The information that we have suggests that the four Belgian Nationals (two males and two females) were travelling towards Kings Canyon at around 12:30 pm when the driver, a 56-year-old male lost control of the vehicle causing it to roll.

“This is an absolutely tragic incident. If the women had been wearing their seat belts they may have only received very minor injuries. It takes only a few seconds to buckle up and even less time to have a fatal crash, so I urge all drivers and parents to get into the habit the moment they hop in the car. You are taking your life into your own hands by travelling any distance without wearing a seat belt.

“I also urge all tourists to the Territory to drive with extreme care as roads and conditions within the NT are unlike any other. If in doubt slow down, your destination can wait.”
