Update #5 -Fires -Alice Springs

Police

Emergency crews have managed to contain large fires burning around Alice Springs, but rural residents are being asked to check they have adequate fire breaks on their properties as the work continues.

Acting Commander Michael White said the Counter-Disaster Committee met this afternoon and planning is underway to develop significant fire breaks east of Alice Springs.

“Because there is a heavy fuel load in that area,  we are planning to mitigate any threat to Alice Springs  by developing extensive fire breaks east of the town in the next few days while winds remain favourable,” A/Commander White said.

“Through the Counter-Disaster Committee we are able to bring together all the stakeholders including Government and non-government organisations to share resources such as heavy plant and equipment  and manpower.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and allocate resources as required until the fires no longer pose any threat. Meanwhile, we would encourage rural residents to ensure they have adequate fire breaks on their property and the areas around homes are kept clear of debris.”

Motorists are asked to continue to use caution when driving on rural roads which may be affected  by smoke hazards.
