Update # 28 – Daly River Evacuations

Police

Voluntary evacuations of people from the Daly River Community have begun this morning.

With the river rising to just under 14.8 metres overnight, residents have been given the option of being taken out of the community.

The river is expected to peak at approximately 14.9 metres about 6pm tonight and hover around the 14 metre mark over the next few days.

Residents who wish to leave will be taken by boat and then bussed to the Woolianna School.

Northern Territory Emergency Services Director Peter Davies says, "It's a non-life threatening situation but those who want to leave are being helped by the NTES and Police."

A significant number of the 300-strong community are expected to take up the offer of voluntary evacuation throughout the day.
