Update #1 - Suspicious death -Alice Springs

Police

An autopsy will be conducted tomorrow on the body of a woman found in the Todd River this morning.

Detective Acting Superintendent Travis Wurst said the autopsy would be conducted to try to determine the cause of the woman’s death.

“A crime scene was established after we received the report of the death around 8.45am this morning. Crime scene guards maintained the scene between Wills Terrace and Schwarz Crescent for most of today while detectives and forensic teams scoured the area for evidence.,” A/Supt Wurst said.

“Police have also spent most of the day taking statements from witnesses in the area at the time the woman’s body was found and door-knocking nearby residences.  While an autopsy will be conducted to try to determine the cause of death, her injuries were such as to lead us to treat the death as suspicious.

“We also expect that we will be able to make a positive identification of the woman following fingerprint  examinations. At present all we know is she is Aboriginal.”

Police are continuing to appeal for anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area of the Todd River near the Wills Terrace footbridge to come forward. Anyone with information should phone police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
