Update # 1 – Cyclone Warning

Police

Four persons have been rescued by Police after vehicles became stranded in flood waters overnight. Police implore people not to attempt to cross swollen creeks under any circumstances.
A Police van was struck by a vehicle last night whilst officers were undertaking traffic direction duties. A 31-year-old Jingili man has been arrested, returning a blood alcohol reading of 0.087% An Ambulance was hit by a falling tree overnight on the grounds of the Hospital. A patient was in the process of being transported at the time. A St Johns Staff member was injured and is being treated at RDH. Many properties sustained damage to varying degrees from trees and water inundation. Members of the community are urged to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions and preparations as directed in the Cyclone Warning Advice.
There is localised flooding in a number of areas. Concern was raised overnight about low lying areas in Rapid Creek where some residents where evacuated overnight by NTES. Residents should consider their options in relation to low lying areas and prepare to move items or themselves should they feel they may be threatened by rising water particularly around the high tide at 5:36pm this afternoon. The airport was closed overnight. Some flights were cancelled by the operators and others were diverted to Alice Springs and their ports of origin. Some power disruptions have occurred overnight and Police warn residents to be aware of fallen power lines that may still be active. All schools from Adelaide River to the Tiwi Islands are closed today. The Magistrates Court and Supreme Court will also be closed today. For road conditions people are urged to call 1800 246 199 For fallen power lines people are urged to call 1800 245 090 To report fallen trees call the Joint Emergency Services Communications Centre on 131 444. The Counter Disaster Council will meet again at 9am tomorrow to review the weather situation.
