NT Police have charged a 23-year-old man in relation to stealing and the unlawful entry of a café in the Darwin CBD last night.

A member of the public alerted Police to the unlawful entry taking place at about 9:25 pm, after he observed a man attempting to smash a window.

Police promptly attended and on arrival found the alleged offender leaving the area with an electronic cash register.

The offender attempted to run from Police after dumping the register, but was caught after a short foot chase.

It is alleged the offender gained access to the cafe by using a tyre lever to jemmy open the locked glass doors, causing the doors to shatter.

The 23-year-old offender has been charged with aggravated unlawful entry and stealing.
