Unlawful Entry - Darwin

Police

NT Police are praising the actions of a 49-year-old man who alerted them to an unlawful entry taking place in Nightcliff yesterday.

Police received the report of a man breaking into a residence at about 3:38 pm.

The man quickly alerted police after he observed two men attempting to gain entry to a neighbouring house.

Police promptly attended and on arrival found the alleged offender still in the house. The offender attempted to run from police by threatening members with a screwdriver, he was subsequently restrained and arrested.

It is alleged the offender and co-offender gained access to the house by using a screwdriver to jemmy open the locked front door.

The 41-year-old offender has been charged with:

  • Aggravated Unlawful Entry
  • Assault Police (Attempt)
  • Resist Police
  • Possess Dangerous Drug – Cannabis

Detective Sergeant Andy Bedwell said the actions of the next door neighbour ultimately resulted in the arrest of the offender.

“Upon seeing suspicious behaviour the man alerted police, which is the right thing to do.

“We are glad that this man did not try and approach these offenders himself, it is best to leave these matters to the police, who are trained to deal with threatening situations.

“He was the 'eyes and ears' of the police and this is a great example of neighbours looking out for each other, also known as Neighbourhood Watch,” he said.

Neighbourhood Watch is a successful community-based crime prevention program aimed at the protection of property and personal safety. In particular, the program is aimed at reducing burglaries. Police are still searching for the alleged co-offender and anyone with information is asked to call them on 131 444 or on Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
