Tennant Creek Assault - Witnesses sought - Update

Police

A woman who was assaulted in Tennant Creek on Saturday the 24th of September has died.

The family of the 28-year-old woman were present when her life support system was switched off yesterday, after having spent 5 days in the intensive care unit of Alice Springs hospital

Police are waiting on the results of a post mortem to determine the cause of death.

“A 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assaulting the woman however there is insufficient evidence at this time to suggest that the assault is linked with the subsequent death.” Sergeant Belinda Sanderson said.

“We are continuing our investigation into the assault and ask for any witnesses to that event to come forward.  We are at this stage treating the death as a separate investigation.”

Anyone who has information into the assault that occurred between 9.00 pm and 9.30 pm on Staunton Street, September 24th is asked to call police on 131 444 or contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
