Teen arrested for car theft –Alice Springs - 4733799

Police

A 13-year-old boy was arrested after allegedly stealing a car in Alice Springs at the weekend.

Police arrested the boy after locating a stolen Peugeot near the Milner Road roundabout on Larapinta Drive just before 2am. The boy and two other teenagers were arrested in relation to the theft of the vehicle earlier in the night, and will be considered for Youth Diversion.

The vehicle was taken from the Alice Springs Resort after the 13-year-old and a co-offender unlawfully entered a room through an unlocked door. They stole a wallet and the car keys while the occupant of the room slept.

Superintendent Michael Murphy said the incident could have been prevented had the occupant remembered to lock his door.

"We see far too many incidents where doors are left unlocked and valuables left in plain sight, so we would urge everyone to remember these simple rules and lock up, even when you're in the room or in your house," Supt Murphy said.

"Let's not make it easy for offenders, who, in so many cases are just opportunists."
