Taxi Driver Assaulted - Casino

Police

Police have arrested and charged a 24-year-old male who allegedly assaulted a taxi driver last night.

It is alleged that the 24-year-old, who was in the company of two others, entered the vehicle outside the Casino at around 11:10 pm and asked to be taken to the city.

Senior Constable First Class Iain Campbell said that the vehicle only just began to move when an altercation occurred between the men in the back seat.

“The offender, who was sat behind the driver, reached around and grabbed and punched the 38-year-old driver to the face and head,” said Senior Constable First Class Campbell.

“The driver stopped the vehicle and called for assistance. Casino security and Police attended and arrested the man a short time later.

“The man was taken into Police custody and has since been charged with aggravated assault, passenger interfere with a drivers control and intentionally endangering safety on a roadway. He was bailed to appear in the Darwin Magistrate’s Court on 8 November 2011.”
