Detectives from the Northern Investigation Section are investigating a suspicious fire that occurred within a unit on Bernhard Street flats in Katherine overnight.

Police and the Fire and Rescue Service attended the residence at about 8:00 pm after the fire had been reported by neighbours.

The fire was contained and extinguished in the laundry area before it could spread to other parts of the unit.

The unit was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Detectives wish to speak with a male of Aboriginal appearance wearing dark blue clothing that was seen leaving the residence immediately prior to the discovery of the fire.

Police urge anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area, or who may have any information in relation to the incident, to contact them on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Investigations are continuing.
