Structure Fire Howard Springs

Police

A caravan with five occupants in Howard Springs caught alight at 6.40 pm last night.

District Officer, Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service, Rob Trewartha said it is believed a youth was playing with a cigarette lighter which resulted in the interior of the caravan catching alight.

“One occupant noticed the fire and quickly escorted the other four occupants from the caravan, disconnecting power and using a fire extinguisher to control the blaze.

“Police and Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) attended, hosing the inside of the caravan to ensure no chance of re-ignition.

“Fire and Rescue treated two occupants for minor smoke inhalation and shock.

“The occupier of the residence was cautioned by NTFRS for failure to maintain fire breaks.

“Given the current extreme fire conditions, this is another timely reminder as to the importance of fire breaks, minimising debris and general rubbish on your property, as well as the safe storage of flammable liquids within your home. In addition, we urge the public to be vigilant in minimising access to cigarette lighters or matches around young children.”
