SSAID Operation – Alice Springs

Five people have been arrested in relation to drug and traffic offences after a three day operation in Alice Springs.

Southern Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and the Dog Operations Unit, with the assistance of the Remote Community Drug Desk, Southern Traffic Operations and a number of bush stations took part in the three day operation last weekend.

Three of those arrested included drink drivers who provided readings of .106%, .169% and .198%.

Officers targeted illicit substances being taken back to remote communities after the Alice Springs Show by locking down Larapinta Drive and the Stuart Highway/Tanami Highway intersection.

Overall results of the operation included:

  • 2 Vehicles seized
  • 823 drivers breath tested
  • 9.373 kilograms of cannabis seized
  • 187.5 litres of alcohol seized
  • 17 people to be summonsed for various offences
  • 41 traffic infringement notices issued
  • 6 Drug infringement notices issued

The drugs seized during the operation have a value of over $900,000.00 if sold in remote communities.

Police will continue with these types of operations to help prevent illicit and volatile substances being transported back into remote communities.
