Special operation – Alice Springs

Police

Four people were issued with liquor banning notices last night under newly enacted legislation which enables offenders to be banned from a designated area for 48 hours.

In a special operation targeting anti-social behaviour and property crime in the CBD, police conducted the first of three nights of high-profile patrols of the Alice Springs CBD to deter and detect such offending.

Acting Superintendent Jody Nobbs said police patrols used the mobile police station as a base at Memorial Club car park between 8pm and around 4am in what was a very successful operation.

"The operation was targeting youth on the street at night," A/Supt Nobbs said.

"The intent is to engage with other service providers such as Congress, Youth Outreach, Street Outreach Service, and Tangentyere Night Patrol to get these young people off the streets in the early hours of the morning and to a place of safety."

The results saw six people arrested for various street offences and eight summary infringement notices issued as well as five loitering and four banning notices issued. Police also tipped out 27 litres of alcohol and conducted Random Breath Tests and drivers licence inspections throughout the night.

"We will continue with these sorts of operations to ensure Alice Springs remains a safe place to live for all residents of the town."
