Skeletal remains are human - Darwin

Police

The skeletal remains were discovered yesterday by contractors as they conducted weed management along the cliff face of the Esplanade.

The contractors contacted police who attended the location along with members of Major Crime, Crime Scene Examination Unit, and Emergency Service Volunteers.

A crime scene was established and an examination of the area was conducted immediately.

Members of the Crime Scene Examination Unit, with the assistance of the Emergency Service Vertical Rescue Team retrieved the bones yesterday by abseiling 10 meters down the cliff.

Initial investigations indicate the bones belong to a man in his 60's. Items found near the remains include a watch, t-shirt, board shorts and a wallet with ID.

Detective Superintendent Jamie Chalker said it appears the remains have been in the area for a considerable period of time however a timeline will be established as soon as possible.

"I can confirm however that these are not the remains of Peter Falconio.

"There is nothing to suggest any foul play at this time; however we are treating this case as suspicious until ruled out otherwise.

"The cause of death is unknown at this time but we will have more of an indication as the investigation unfolds." said Superintendent Chalker.

A coronial file is being prepared for the corner and investigations are continuing.
