Police and security staff evacuated the Casuarina Shopping Centre in Trower Road this morning after a fire was detected in one of the centre’s shops.

Senior Sergeant Bob Harrison said the alarm was raised after flames were spotted in Angus and Cootes jewellery store just after 9.30am.

“Fire crews in BA equipment managed to extinguish the blaze however the complex remained closed for another two hours due to thick smoke,” Sen Sgt Harrison said.

“Investigations are continuing however we believe at this stage the fire started due to an electrical fault.”
