Sexual assault – Alice Springs

Police are investigating a sexual assault which occurred in Alice Springs over night.

Police received a report from a 53-year-old woman that she had been sexually assaulted in the Todd River just before 9.30pm last night. The victim told police she and another two females were walking along Stott Terrace when they were approached by a man who threatened them. The offender told the other females to leave and he then allegedly threatened the victim with a knife before hitting her on the head with a rock. He then dragged her into the river bed and assaulted her.

The woman managed to run off after the assault and she flagged down a passing police patrol. The victim pointed out the alleged offender and he was arrested.

The 31-year-old man is expected to be interviewed later today.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area of Stott Terrace roundabout around the time of the assault to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
