Serious MVAs

Police

Numerous people have been injured, some seriously, after a series of single vehicle rollovers across the Territory today.

Just after half-past-three this morning a 20-year-old man rolled his car several times after falling asleep at the wheel, 19 kilometres south of Pine Creek.

He suffered cuts to his arms, hands and legs from broken glass.

At 10am a male was trapped under a car when it left the road, rolled and came to rest 10 metres into the scrub, about 40 kilometres east of Timber Creek.

The man was flown to hospital suffering head injuries.

A blown tyre caused a third rollover this morning, 50 kilometres west of Katherine.

About a quarter-past-eleven, five international tourists were travelling in a Toyota Landcruiser when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to flip onto its side, before rolling four-to-five times.

Three people were taken to hospital suffering various injuries.

And just after half-past-one this afternoon, two people were trapped after a rollover in Litchfield Park.

The two occupants were left suspended by their seatbelts, one unconscious.

Both were airlifted to hospital by helicopter.

Police Watch Commander Louise Jorgensen says all of these people are lucky to have survived such serious crashes.

“To have four separate vehicle rollovers and no deaths is remarkable.”

“People need to be vigilant at all times, particularly when driving in remote and regional areas. Fatigue, inattention and speed can easily end in disaster and police encourage people to take care.”
