Search and Rescue – Galiwinku - Suspended

Police

NT Police have suspended the search for a 54-year-old man who went missing at Galiwinku on Sunday.

Police and Emergency Service personnel initiated the search and rescue effort on 1 May after the man failed to return home from a fishing trip.

The 54-year-old man is believed to have gone fishing by himself at Mission Beach about 8:00am Sunday and has not been seen since. Family members have informed Police that the man always goes fishing at the beach and will often wade in the water.

Local police, Territory Response Group (TRG) members, NT Emergency Service personnel, Mathakal Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Rangers and community members conducted four days of air, land and water searches of the area until it was determined the search would be suspended at 12:30pm today.

Police yesterday located a number of the man's personal items, including clothing and fishing gear.

It is alleged three crocodiles have been sighted in the area and members from TRG with assistance from Parks and Wildlife, have since destroyed one of the animals. On further examination of the crocodile no human remains located.

At this stage the search has been suspended; however, if further information comes to hand the search may be reinitiated.

NT Police remind Territorians and visitors not to become complacent when it comes to crocodiles. Be CROCWISE- croc danger is real, so don't risk your life. If there is no sign, do not swim in the area.
