Scavenger hunt investigations – Alice Springs

Police

Police are investigating a trend in Alice Springs in which young people are taking part in scavenger hunts.

Superintendent Michael Murphy said whilst the usual forms of scavenger hunts were not illegal, the modified version which has come to police attention in Alice Springs recently certainly were.

"We received a report from a liquor store security guard on Saturday night about a young person drinking the contents of a bottle of liquor and replacing it on the shelf," Supt Murphy said.

"He was apprehended and brought to police attention. We discovered the incident was one of the taskings or dares given to participants of a scavenger hunt.

"Other tasks included stealing of letter boxes and fire extinguishers and the egging of cars and pedestrians.

"We have identified a 17-year-old girl who was one of the organisers of the event and have spoken to her. We are continuing to investigate this incident but anyone involved in these scavenger hunts needs to be put on notice that this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated."
