SA drugs operations –Alice Springs

Police

Members of the Substance Abuse Intelligence Desk and the Dog Operations Unit from Alice Springs joined South Australian police in a joint operation at Amata over the long weekend.

The South Australian community of Amata held a football carnival over the Mayday long weekend and the combined operation was conducted to target illicit drugs and alcohol being brought into the community.

During the four-day operation 56 vehicles and 250 people were searched by the drug detection dogs. Freight and passengers on buses coming into the community were also searched.

Detective Senior Constable Adam Van Oosten said the joint operation resulted in the seizure of approximately 80 grams of Cannabis and the seizure of a firearm and a quantity of ammunition.

"Eight drug infringement notices were issued and 16 traffic infringement notices were also issued," Det Sen Const Van Oosten said.

"The SAID and the DOU members regularly join police in other jurisdictions for these types of cross-border operations. This allows for better use of resources and intelligence sharing between the jurisdictions and we will continue to target those people trying to bring drugs or alcohol into remote communities."
