A 39-year-old man was knocked unconscious after he was assaulted by three men in Alice Springs on Friday night.

The victim told police he was walking along the Wills Terrace footbridge at around 11.30pm when a vehicle stopped alongside the bridge and three men got out of the car. They then approached him and allegedly assaulted him. He was hit over the head with an unknown object and then kicked a number of times as he lay on the ground.

The victim walked to his home in Eastside and attended the hospital for treatment the next day and also reported the incident to police.

All three offenders are described as Caucasian males. One of the men appeared to be in his early 20s, approximately 165cm tall with a medium build, wearing a dark cap, black and white patterned jacket and denim jeans. The car is described as being a dark hatchback or small four-wheel-drive.

The victim told police the assault rendered him unconscious and when he woke up he found $320 in cash was missing from his wallet.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the assault to come forward.
