Road warning –Tennant Creek

Police

Motorists are warned to take care on Central Australian roads after localised flooding in remote areas following heavy rain.

Superintendent Megan Rowe said several low lying areas on the Stuart Highway between Alice Springs and Tennant Creek were impassable except for four-wheel drive vehicles.

"Gilbert Swamp on the Stuart Highway south of tenant Creek is always one of the worst affected area after heavy rain, and the information I've received is the road has been damaged and is only passable by four wheel drive vehicles. Localised flooding has also left a great deal of sand on the road, and motorists are urged to take care," Supt Rowe said.

"The Sandover Highway from Amaroo to the Queensland border is also impassable, and there is quite a lot of water across the Stuart Highway in places between Alice Springs and Ti Tree."

Supt Rowe said motorists should check road conditions before beginning their journey, and then only drive in areas where water is over the road with the utmost care. Road condition reports are available on the NT Government website at http://www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/roadreport.
