Road train rollover - Alice Springs

Police

Traffic was diverted around the scene of an accident on the south Stuart Highway yesterday after the third trailer on a road train rolled onto its side.

Just before 8.30am Police and fire crews received a report of the incident which occurred  45 kilometres from Alice Springs.

Initial reports advised the trailer contained the hazardous material acetaldeyde ammonia. Fire crews donned breathing apparatus (BA) to check the rear trailer for any spills and the prime mover and two remaining trailers were removed to safety.

District Fire Officer Tom Konieczny said the trailer was righted after being checked for spills.

“We were initially wary of the possibility of a hazardous material spill as the vehicle was listed as carrying toxic material. Luckily the trailer which rolled was not carrying acetaldehyde ammonia and it was righted and transported to Alice Springs with no further incident,” Mr Konieczny said.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
