Reported Sexual Assault Darwin City Update

Police

Northern Territory Police Sex Crimes Division have charged a 24-year-old man following the alleged sexual assault near Cullen Bay on Tuesday 6 December.

The incident is alleged to have occurred at approximately 2:45am, near the Cullen Bay roundabout, Larrakeyah.

The 46-year-old victim was walking along Kahlin Avenue towards Cullen Bay when she was dragged into nearby vacant land and allegedly physically and sexually assaulted by the male.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Manley of the NT Police Sex Crimes Division said the search for the offender was an immediate priority.

“Extensive investigations were conducted, strongly aided by the available CBD CCTV footage, which quickly identified a person of interest. Detectives also received valuable information from the public during door-to-door canvassing of the area.

“Further detective work to locate the person while trying not to ‘tip him off’ that we were on his trail, saw the arrest of the 24-year-old male late Tuesday night.

“Police are pleased to inform the community that he has been charged today with sexual Intercourse without consent, deprivation of liberty and causing serious harm.  He has been remanded in custody to appear later today in the Darwin Magistrates Court.

“Police would also like to thank the Darwin community for their valuable assistance in bringing this matter to a resolution” Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Manley said.
