Police out in force on New Year's Eve

Police will be out in force on New Years Eve to ensure everyone starts the New Year on a positive note and enjoys a great night out.

New Years Eve operations will be conducted throughout the Northern Territory targeting anti-social behaviour, public drinking, violence and drink driving.

Commander, Darwin Metropolitan Command, Jamie Chalker said there will be an increased Police presence and additional resources deployed, Police will be everywhere.

“There will be a significant focus in the city to ensure people are enjoying themselves, acting responsibly and staying safe. In part of ensuring this, Police have arranged for the road to be closed between Knuckey and Peel Streets.

“Mobile and random breath testing stations will be in operation to take those who choose to place people at risk by drink driving, off the road. If you're driving impaired, look for the police behind you, because that's where we're going to be.

“We will also be targeting drink drivers first thing New Years Day, so the message is simple 'If you plan to drink alcohol, plan to get home safely without placing yourself, your licence and other people at risk! If you don't, you will be caught and we will arrest you!’.

“Additional Police resources will also be on patrol in the suburbs to see in the New Year and target recidivist property offenders. While you are out having a good time, others can see this as an opportunity for them to enter your home. If you are heading out, ensure your home is secure, so no one wakes up starting the year off as a victim of crime.

"Our message is simple. We are there to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable night. All we ask is that everyone looks after one another, drinks sensibly and makes plans to get home safely.

"There will be a lot of people in town and a lot of people trying to leave at the same time. But with some forward thinking, options are available such as staying in a hotel, arranging a sober bob driver, catch the free Starlight Express bus, the Darwin Bus Service, taxis or mini buses.

“We are not about stopping people from going out and having fun, it’s about making our community a safer place for everyone to enjoy,” said Commander Chalker.
