Northern Territory Police Dog Operations Unit members have today discovered a significant amount of cannabis being transported on a domestic flight from Adelaide to Darwin.
Drug Detector Dog 'Archie' discovered approximately 14 kilograms of cannabis hidden in cryovaced packaging in the luggage of a 30-year-old South Australian man.
The man was also found to have a quantity of methylamphetamine strapped to his leg. He was arrested and is currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries.
The seizure comes as part of Operation Glomar which has seen a concentrated effort by Drug Detector Dogs at the Darwin Airport and other transport hubs.
Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Schiller of the Drug and Organised Crime Section said that the seizure was significant and represented approximately 15,000 deals of cannabis that would not reach our streets
“Once again our Drug Detector Dogs have proven invaluable in keeping drugs off the street.
“It is disappointing that criminals still attempt to bring these substances to the Territory. We will be continuing to monitor all points of entry into the Territory to keep our community safe from these activities,” Detective Senior Sergeant Schiller said.
If the drugs had been sold they would have an estimated street value of $450,000.
