'Permit to Burn' Season off to scorching start

Police

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) launched the ‘Permit to Burn’ season in Coolalinga this afternoon with a massive blaze. Gamba grass provided the fuel as volunteer units from Howard Springs joined NTFRS personnel from Humpty Doo to raise awareness that the burn off permit season commences today.

Hazard Reduction Officer Patrick Skewes said the burns reduce fuel loads on areas before they can be revitalised with the coming wet season.

“Rural residents can now apply for a permit to burn from their local fire station.

“Permits are free but areas must be inspected and made safe before a burn can proceed.”

Geraldine Lee from the Weed Management Branch of the Dept Natural Resources Environment the Arts and Sport said that working closely with the NTFRS and Bushfires NT has helped control the spread of gamba grass but there was still a long way to go.

“We need people to become more aware of the impacts of this fast growing grass.

“Our department has resources available, free of charge, to assist landholders to manage gamba grass on their property.

“There is a short window of opportunity to act now before it starts growing again with the seasonal rains.”  She said.
