Nine more drunk drivers –Alice Springs

Police

Police arrested another nine drink drivers in Alice Springs overnight between 4pm and 3am.

Superintendent Michael Murphy said the latest arrests brought the total of drink drivers caught in the last 48 hours to 15.

"Eight of the nine caught returned high range blood alcohol readings. This is above 0.15 per cent.."

Supt Murphy said the offenders included four female drivers aged between 22 and 37 and five male drivers aged between 23 and 43.

"The driver with the highest blood alcohol reading was a 28-year-old woman who blew .279 per cent. She was arrested after she crashed into another car at the intersection of Lovegrove Drive and Smith Street at 4.30 in the afternoon.

"Police will continue to clamp down on drink drivers as part of our on-going road safety strategy. These people 's decision-making is impaired and they present a huge risk to themselves and the community."

Supt Murphy said police wanted to ensure that this weekend's Finke Desert Race continued to be held in a safe environment and would be out in force focussing on spectators and motorists around the race track.
