New Years - Wrap Up

Police

Fifty people were taken into protective custody overnight after a night of celebrations in Darwin City

A 32-year-old man has been charged in relation to traffic and assault police offences after leading members on a pursuit in Darwin City. Police initially attempted to apprehend the vehicle in Winnellie when the offender failed to stop. A short time later the man stopped at a dead end in Stuart Park and fled on foot before he was apprehended by police at Dinah Beach.

Despite police efforts to educate against the dangers of drink driving, 21 people were arrested with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit including three juveniles.

Duty Superintendent Rob Burgoyne said police were disappointed with the amount of people drink driving.

"It is so disappointing people are not getting the message and it is just not acceptable".

"NT Police will continue to target these irresponsible motorists and take them off our roads" he said.

Media Note - Duty Superintendent Rob Burgoyne will be available for interview at the Peter McCauley Centre in Berrimah at 1:00pm.
