New Year's Eve Road Closure - Reminder - Darwin

Police

Northern Territory Police would to like remind members of the public that a part of Mitchell Street will again be closed to traffic this New Year’s Eve.

The NT Police has been granted approval by Darwin City Council to have the entertainment precinct of Mitchell Street restricted to pedestrians only throughout the night.

The closure of Mitchell Street will take place between Peel and Knuckey Streets from 6:00 pm tomorrow, through until 7:00 am Sunday 1 January 2012.  A portion of Peel Street from Mitchell Street to the Esplanade will also be one-way for vehicular traffic.

Commander Jamie Chalker said the focus of our patrols throughout the CBD is to keep people in a safe environment.  We want people to enjoy themselves and minimise risks associated with large numbers of people, alcohol and motor vehicles.

“Closing this small section of Mitchell Street is a simple safety measure with minimal inconvenience to motorists.”

The road closure does not apply to Emergency services vehicles.

Darwin City Council advice is that the taxi rank opposite Shenanigans will be relocated onto Peel Street and the taxi rank outside the cinema complex will not be impacted by the closure.

The public is reminded that alcohol may only be consumed within licensed premises and can not be consumed on Mitchell Street itself.
