Near Drowning - Jabiru

Police

A three-year-old girl has been flown to Darwin after a near drowning incident in Cooinda this morning.

Acting Sergeant Rowan Wake said that one adult was supervising up to six children, aged between three and ten, when the incident occurred at a resort pool.

“It is believed that the man turned away for a couple of seconds and when he turned back around he saw that the three-year-old girl was under water.

“He immediately swam over, pulled her out of the water and commenced CPR.

“Local Police and Clinic Staff attended and provided immediate assistance. The young girl has since been flown to the Royal Darwin Hospital by Careflight helicopter with her mother.

“Thankfully the man knew CPR as this ultimately saved the young girls life.

“With the current hot weather conditions and the Christmas holidays about to commence, it is a timely reminder for parents and adults to be diligent in the supervision of children in and around the water. This incident also highlights the importance of knowing First Aid.

“Drowning can happen very quickly and quietly. It can be impossible to hear the cries for help of someone who is drowning. Sadly, drowning is the number one cause of death for children under five,” said Acting Sergeant Wake.
