Mother arrested for baby assault – Alice Springs

Police

A 23-year-old woman has been arrested after allegedly assaulting her 16-month-old baby at a residence in Van Senden Avenue, Alice Springs.

Police received a report from the child's 31-year-old father just after 5.30pm on Monday that the woman was assaulting the little boy.

The man told police she had hit him over the head a number of times with a full can of soft drink before pulling him out of his pram by his shoulder. She then allegedly picked the boy up by one of his legs and slamming him onto the ground three times. She then again held him upside down by the leg and slammed him into a metal fence before holding his head under her arm and punching him to the head.

The boy's father called police and reported the incident.

Police located the mother and child at their home just after 4am this morning (Wednesday). The mother was arrested and the child taken to hospital for treatment and later released.

The mother is expected to be charged later today.
