Missing vessel located – Vernon Island

Police

The sole occupant of the 6.5 metre Quintrex had departed Dinah Beach boat ramp early yesterday morning and was expected to return at approximately 4:30 pm last night.

Police were alerted when he failed to return and with the assistance of the Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra have since located him between North West and East Vernon Islands.

Sergeant Glenn McPhee said it appears the boats motor may have malfunctioned.

"Apart from not having a radio on board, the man had all the essential safety equipment. He set off flares, however chose not to activate the EPIRB.

"We encourage people in these situations to utilise all available safety equipment. The activation of an EPIRB in situations such as this, ensures a timely response from rescue authorities. It also gives us a defined location which assists in coordination of the most efficient response. This can prevent a lot of grief as well as saving a lot of resources which are supported by the taxpayer.

"Thankfully in this case the vessel was spotted by a searching aircraft, locating him safe and well" he said.
