Missing tourist found – Alice Springs

Police

Police have found a hiker who went missing near Ormiston Gorge overnight.

Police were alerted after an emergency beacon registered to the woman was activated just after 1am.

Members of the Territory Response Group travelled to Ormiston Gorge to conduct a search at first light. The woman was located safe and well after she was spotted by police from a helicopter.

The woman told police she was doing the Pound Walk from Ormiston Gorge when she missed a turn and became lost. She spent the night in a creek bed and activated her EPIRB around 1am. A search was mounted and she was located about eight kilometres from the track just after 7.30am today.

Superintendent Michael Murphy said the 60-year-old woman was from interstate and was an experienced hiker.

"Once again this incident shows the value of taking an emergency beacon with you if you intend hiking in bushland.," Supt Murphy said.

"With the increase in tourist activity it is important to register your walk and intended timeframes with Park Rangers and advise friends and family when and where you intend to go.

"If you put these measures in place and you are overdue, Rangers, Police and Emergency Services can be advised and commence preparations for a search and rescue."

This is the second hiker in two weeks to be rescued after activating an emergency beacon.
