Members from the Southern Major Crash Investigation Unit and local members from Ali Curung are investigating the cause of a crash that killed three people and left four people critically injured.

Acting Sergeant Nicholas Waite said Police were notified of the single vehicle rollover at about 9:00 pm last night.

“The crash occurred approximately five kilometres from the Stuart Highway along the Ali Curung Access Road.

“The Ford Falcon Sedan contained nine people who are all residents of Ali Curung.

“As a result of the crash, the 19-year-old male driver and two passengers, a 23-year-old female and a 28-year-old male, have died.

“A 19-year-old female, two 16-year-old boys and a 33-year-old man were critically injured as a result of the crash. They have since been medivacced to the Alice Springs Hospital.

“A 25-year-old man was taken to the Tennant Creek Hospital as a precaution. A ninth passenger who is believed to have been uninjured in the crash is yet to be located.

“Investigations are continuing and it is unknown at this stage if speed or alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash,” said A/Sergeant Waite.

This now takes the Territory road toll to 37 compared to 42 for the same period last year.
