Man Arrested - Indecent Assault - Palmerston

Police

General Crime Detectives have arrested a 25-year-old man in relation to the indecent assault of a 15-year-old girl in Gunn yesterday.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Chris Board from the General Crime Section said the victim was walking along Maluka Drive at approximately 4:00 pm when she noticed a man following her.

“The victim crossed Maluka Drive at the corner of Tomkinson Street when the man grabbed her from behind.

“The man pulled the victim to the ground and pinned her down, where he then indecently assaulted her.

“Two off-duty Police Officers were driving along Maluka Drive just prior to the assault taking place. The driver became concerned when he observed some behaviour in his rear view mirror and immediately turned around and drove back to assist the victim.

“The victim was attempting to fight off the man while screaming out for help.

“The man got up and ran back up Maluka Drive, at which time the off-duty Police Officer and another witness gave chase in a vehicle whilst contacting Police, giving them a description of the man. The second off-duty Officer stayed with the victim, who was obviously very upset.

“The man was apprehended in bush land between Roystonea Avenue and Maluka Drive a short time later by responding Police members. He is currently being interviewed by Detectives.

“This was a brazen and callous attack that occurred in broad daylight. The off-duty Police Officers were in the right place at the right time, which ultimately led to the swift apprehension of the man. The actions of this brave young woman trying to fight off this man should also be highlighted, especially under such terrifying circumstances.

“We have had a number of witnesses come forward with information, but I urge anyone else who may have witnessed the assault or who may have observed any suspicious behaviour in the area yesterday afternoon to contact Police on 131 444 or on Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” said Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Board.
