Forensic testing of synthetic cannabis type substances seized from a local retailer has revealed that they contravene new amendments to the Misuse of Drugs Act.

The Misuse of Drugs Amendment (Synthetic Cannabinoids) Regulations 2011, introduced on 3 August, stipulates that synthetic cannabinoids such as “Kronic”, “K2” and “Hooch” are illegal substances, however, NT Police allege a Darwin tobacconist continued to sell these products to the public.

Sergeant Allan Milner from the Drug and Organised Crime Section alleges the proprietors sold illegal substances to an undercover officer.

“Approximately 2kg of synthetic cannabinoids were seized from the premises in August and October.

“The proprietors will be summonsed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court for Possession and Supply of a Commercial Quantity of a Schedule 2 drug.

“Police are concerned about the potentially harmful side effects that synthetic drugs, sometimes marketed as ‘safe’, can have on the public.

“The public are reminded that the purchase and use of synthetic cannabis substances is illegal and won’t be tolerated,” Sergeant Milner said.
