A 57-year-old man remains in Police custody after an assault that occurred in Darwin City last night.

It is alleged that a 42-year-old and 57-year-old male were sitting together near Bank SA on Knuckey Street at around 10:30 pm when an altercation occurred.

The 42-year-old was assaulted with a mallet and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital to receive treatment.

The offender presented himself to Police at the Darwin Station and was subsequently arrested.

He is likely to be charged later today and will appear in court in due course.
