Police

A 27-year-old male will appear in Nhulunbuy Court today in relation to drug offences.

Nhulunbuy Police arrested the male at the local Airport at around 7:35 pm last night after he was found to be in the possession of two suspicious bags. Upon searching them, Police located 44 clip seal bags, containing a total 38.33kg’s of Kava.

He was charged with possess commercial quantity of kava, provide false details to Police and will appear in court today.

Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said the offender is a Tongan National who is currently in Australia on a Tourist Visa.

“It is believed that the offender travelled from Sydney with the kava to Gove and it was heading to remote communities, where it could fetch a price of up to $38,330,” Senior Sergeant Brendan Muldoon said.

“The Northern Territory Police are being very vigilant in trying to stop Kava getting to remote communities. We have great support from FaHCSIA and other Government agencies but we would really like more support from the communities. There are people in the Gove area who are making a lot of money from black market Kava and we would love to hear from anyone who could help us identify these people. This offender was supported by others in Gove and Police are continuing their investigations to track down more law-breakers.”
