Police have found human remains in a car which was found submerged in a water course in the Darwin River area.

Detective Superintendent Richard Bryson of the Major  Crime Division said police salvaged a Toyota Corolla sedan late this afternoon in a water course near Leonino Road.

“An inspection of the vehicle led to the discovery of human remains. The vehicle is believed to be that of missing person Karen Margaret Kelly,”  Det Supt Bryson said.

“Ms Kelly was last seen on April 18, 2010. Her  family has been appraised of the latest  developments in the investigation and police investigations are continuing.”

The remains will be forensically tested to determine their identity and possible cause of death. No further details are available at this stage.
