Hoon caught for third time - Alice Springs

Police

An 18-year-old man will face court after police caught him hooning for the third time in less than a year.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said police were setting up an RBT station on the Stuart Highway just after 4pm on Friday when they noticed two cars apparently racing each other from Dalgety Road onto the Stuart Highway.

“Both vehicles were travelling at high speed as they turned south onto the Stuart Highway with smoke coming from their back tyres,” Sergeant Robertson said.

“Police directed them into the RBT station and the driver of the black Holden complied, however the driver of the silver vehicle turned right into Power Street and fled from police.

“The 18-year-old driver of the black SS Holden Commodore was found to be the same person who had already been apprehended twice before for hooning. His previous vehicle had been impounded for three months in June when he was caught hooning for the second time, so he just went out and bought another car. This time police will make an application to the courts to permanently forfeit his vehicle,” Sgt Robertson said.

“This situation is so frustrating. You would think he would have learned from the previous two occasions, but clearly he simply has no regard for the law or the safety of other road users. It’s ridiculous to think that he deliberately went out to buy a replacement car so he could continue to flaunt his disregard for the law.

“He’s obviously got more money than sense, because there is now a good chance he’ll lose his car permanently.”

The man was issued with a Notice to Appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court for numerous offences including drive with a suspended licence, drive in a reckless manner and take part in a street race.
