Flood Watch Updates – Katherine, Beswick and Daly River

Katherine Police wish to advise that the Gorge Road remains closed at Maude Creek due to localised flooding. The Katherine River peaked at 4.2 metres overnight at the Nitmiluk Centre at 10.40 pm and is currently 3.42 metres and falling. At the community of Beswick, Waterhouse River remains steady at 7.2m. No issues relating to flood waters have been identified within the Beswick Community at this time. The Daly River at the Daly River Police Station is currently 13.2 metres and steady. The Region 2 Counter Disaster Committee stood up a temporary Evacuation Centre for vulnerable residents at the Wooliana School yesterday afternoon due to the Daly River reaching 12.99 metres. In accordance with the Daly River Evacuation Plan, people identified to be medically at risk or residing in low lying areas when the River reached 13 metres were encouraged to evacuate. 14 residents took the option and were evacuated to the Wooliana School. The temporary evacuation centre is being managed by the Department of Education and Training, Northern Territory Police and Northern Territory Emergency Service. Local residents are also providing support. The Region 2 Counter Disaster Committee are scheduled to meet at 11am today to discuss further flood preparation for the Daly River Region.
