The Southern Region Counter Disaster Committee is meeting this afternoon and the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been activated in response to a large number of fires burning around Alice Springs.
Acting Commander Michael White said a large number of bushfires have been burning in rural areas around Alice Springs for more than a month and the EOC had been activated to provide logistical support for Bushfires NT whose members have been operating the response to those fires.
“Because of the extent of the fires and the length of time they have been burning, Bushfires NT resources were becoming critically stretched, so it was decided to activate the EOC to provide additional support and co-ordination in fighting the fires,” A/Cmdr White said.
“The Counter Disaster Committee will now provide a multi-agency approach to help monitor the various fires and provide additional resources. As well as significant fires that are continuing to burn around Alice Springs, NT Fire and Rescue Service crews were alerted to a fire near Flynn’s Grave west of Alice Springs this morning. The fire was deemed to be a threat to the Alice Springs Desert Park so the park was evacuated as a precaution.
“The fire then continued to burn as it was fuelled by strong winds, posing a threat to two town camps to the west and south of town. Properties on the Golden Mile were also under threat after another fire flared up just before 2pm. That fire has now been brought under control.
“What is also of particular concern is that a number of these fires appear to be deliberately lit. As recently as this morning a 25-year-old man was arrested at Imanpa after allegedly being caught deliberately lighting fires in the area. He will now be charged and will be brought before the courts,” A/Cmdr White said.
Motorists are also being warned to delay their travel to remote areas if possible as many roads have been closed. They are also urged to drive with their lights on as thick smoke continues to cause a traffic hazard throughout Central Australia.
The public is also reminded that a total fire ban is in force throughout Central Australia and will remain until further notice.
