Fire Danger Index to Reach Catastrophic

Police

NT Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) advise that the Territory’s Fire Danger Index (FDI) is projected to reach above 100 later today, classified as ‘Catastrophic’.

“Yesterday’s FDI also reached Catastrophic peaking at 136, which is also the first time this year it has been at this level,” said David Ellis, A/Director Operations NTFRS.

A total fire ban has been declared - No person shall light a fire or cause a fire to be lit in the open in the portion of the Northern Territory lying within the Northern and Katherine Fire Protection Zones.

This includes the Darwin, Batchelor, Adelaide River, Pine Creek and Katherine Emergency Response Areas, including Litchfield and Coomalie Shires.

People should be extremely careful before undertaking any out door work that could cause an ignition.

“We also urge members of the public to be vigilant and if smoke or fire is identified call triple zero ‘000’ immediately.”
