Fatality Free January

Police

Police are pleased to announce that the Territory road toll for January 2011 remained at zero.

Superintendent John Emeny of the Traffic Operations Division said that this is the first time in the Territories recorded history that this has occurred.

"The Department of Lands and Planning began recording the NT Road Toll back in 1981 and since then, we have never seen a fatality free January.

"I would like to praise the safe driving of a majority of Territorians, minus a few that still continue to ignore our warnings. An example of this is the 40-year-old male that was travelling at speed along Bees Creek Road on Friday 28 January, resulting in his car colliding with a power pole. Police believe he was also under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He remains in a critical but stable condition in Royal Darwin Hospital.

"I urge all road users to continue to drive with caution at all times to prevent any further road trauma in 2011" he said.
