Fatal Rollover – Wadeye – Update

Police

A 49-year-old woman remains in a stable condition in Royal Darwin Hospital following the fatal rollover that occurred in Wadeye yesterday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Debra Gabolinscy said it appears the 53-year-old male driver was travelling south west along Old Mission Road when the rollover occurred.

“It is believed that the vehicle, a Mitsubishi Triton containing four people, approached the intersection of Old Mission Road and Mission Beach Road at speed,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Gabolinscy.

“The three year-old girl and a 49-year-old woman were ejected from the vehicle. The little girl was given medical treatment however died shortly after the crash. The 49-year-old woman received serious injuries and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.

“This crash was horrific and at this stage it looks as though it was preventable with none of the passengers or driver wearing a seatbelt. It is amazing that the two year-old girl that was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash, escaped with no injuries.

“This not only highlights the need to drive with care and to slow down, but also the importance that seatbelts play in crashes.”

Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing.
