Fatal Plane Crash

Police

A pilot has been killed after the charter plane he was flying crashed on the Tiwi Islands.

The Cessna 310 went down in bushland on Bathurst Island, north of Darwin, just before 10:00pm last night.

The 22-year-old had just dropped off Tiwi Bombers footballers returning to the Island after their AFLNT match in Darwin.

Just after takeoff the plane crashed about one kilometre from the airstrip.

The plane was part of a convoy of five, returning footballers and fans to their community.

Police investigators are currently at the scene of the crash, after walking through thick scrubland last night to locate the plane.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will take carriage of the investigation.
