The NT road toll has risen to 12 after a fatal car crash that occurred at approximately 3:10 pm this afternoon in Marrakai.

It appears that two vehicles were travelling along the Arnhem Highway outside of Leaning Tree Lagoon Nature Park when they crashed, resulting in the death of a female.

Police, Fire and Rescue and St John Ambulance members attended the scene and have since conveyed three passengers to hospital.

The road remains closed to heavy vehicles as emergency services tend to the scene and road users are urged to avoid the area.

Police will investigate the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.

This now takes the NT road toll to 12 compared to 18 for the same period last year.
